heartburn, hair loss and ear plugs

i don't believe you are ever fully prepared for motherhood.
no matter how many "what to expect" and "baby on the block" books you
read, nothing really gives you an understanding of what being a momma
entails except the experience itself.

my girlfriends and i often joke about writing a book on the truth of pregnancy,
labor and motherhood but the reality is there are tons of those books out, and tons
of people willing to share their personal experiences with you before you deliver . . .

. . . the problem is pregnant women can't hear.
i'm serious. something happens to our brains. we enter this baby la-la land mode
and all we think about is our sweet little babe and holding it and feeding it and cooing at it.

well here are some things i wish i had "heard" from fellow moms, books and magazines.

the poo poo list:
-heartburn is from the devil himself. straight from h-e-double-hockey-sticks.
-you will sweat like a banshee, even when the weather is 10 below zero.
-after you give birth 50% of your luscious pregnancy hair will fall out. straight into the drain.
-breastfeeding is the equivalent of dying 1,000 deaths. {ok not for all, but for me it was.}
-going #2 for the first time after delivering is scarier then delivering. for realz!
-get used to crying. and crying. and crying.
-you will never truly sleep again.
-you may have days where you say "can i send her back to the hospital for a couple months?"
{of course you don't really mean that, it's just your raging hormones talking.}
-get yourself a pair of ear plugs. seriously just do it.

the uhhhmazingly good list:
-your heart will literally burst with love 1,000 times every day.
-staring at your precious babes tiny toes, nose, and mouth
will move you to tears {of joy}.
-you will suddenly feel completely complete.
-every coo, squeak, and sigh will be the best noise you've ever heard.
-spontaneous hugs and kisses never, ever, ever get old. ever.
-you will truly grasp what unconditional love is.
-watching them learn and discover new things will excite you more then it does them.
-you will finally understand and have a deeper love for your own parents. hello!
-every day of heartburn, nausea, vomiting, the contractions, the pushing
and every other struggle you might face, it's all worth it. 100% worth it.

i'm so glad i'm a mother to my sweet paisley grace.
and just so we're clear, the good list majorly out weighs the poo poo list. ; )

anything you mommas would add to those lists?!

So so so true!! I think you should consider writing a book because you totally hit the nail on the head with all these things!!! Especially heartburn and owie breast feeding. I remember sending my husband a text saying " my freakin nipples are falling off and bleeding.. Screw this!!!! " he just quietly nodded and said " yes dear" lol. But all the things on the second list are so true as well! Sorry for the long comment, xoxo!!

Steph,
I remember when I started losing my hair after Gabriel, I asked my mom if it was normal. When she said yes, I was flabbergasted as to why no one ever warned me! LOL! Then again, I like to think if I knew all the crazy stuff that would happen I would have hesitated longer to sign up for motherhood. Luckily I didn't because the joy far outweighs the yuck.
Awesome post!

To add to the fact that you are one of the most beautiful people I know, you are the most adorable, stunning, glowing pregnant woman I have ever seen. True fact! :) I'm with you sister in all of these things. I always thought about writing a "pregnancy sucks" book. I was miserable!! BUT my children full my life with more joy, love, and really give me purpose. At the time it may not seem worth it but once the baby gets here, it is 1000000% worth it. Being a mama is the absolute best

Just found your blog. Precious. I'm a first time mama to a sweet three month old boy and the shedding thing? WHY does no one tell you that? I'm almost bald. Seriously.

what a great post girl, everything you said is sooo soo true!! the breastfeeding thing... AMEN sista, that thing is TOUGH!! i wish we could have stayed in the hospital longer initially to know that i wasn't feeding him enough instead of finding out on my own!! and #2 after labor... gosh that was SCARY!! also, another poo poo thing is the tears, there will be tons of it and it's totally uncontrollable (from baby and mama)!! and i totally LOVE baby toes!!!

i was never a glowing pregnant momma! most of my pregnancy i hated. but after losing my first 2, it was well worth the weight gain, preeclampsia, vomiting, heartburn, lack of energy....and ambition to eat whole pies from bakers square.. ;-) when i finally had wesley...nothing on this earth could possibly compare..and when i went on to have jada, i wondered how i could ever love someone as much as i did wesley, but i do... and same with leila... she is my dolly doll climbing on my back right now...and i love her more than the tears i cried when i found out i was pregnant again =) i lover her more than anything i can ever imagine... all those things we go through, are nothing guys will ever experience...but at the same time, they can never "experience" it =)

Oh my goodness...you are so right in that pregnant women can't hear! We stop our ears. I guess it's just something that is better learned on our own....?? I don't know. Breastfeeding was definitely not a beautiful thing for me! :-P
